Prof. Dr. Ahmed Niazy El-Barkooky

Regional Sequence Stratigraphy Geological Consultant

Biography

El-Barkooky, Ahmed Ph.D. in sedimentary geology (Cairo University)

Research fellow of the Technical University of Berlin (Germany)

Experience in sequence stratigraphy and sedimentology, petroleum geology, basin analysis, field geology and GIS.

Ahmed N. El-Barkooky graduated with B.Sc. (Honours) Degree in geology from Cairo University. He got his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees, where he was appointed as a lecturer of geology at the Geology Department, Faculty of Science in Cairo University. He’s been teaching several courses and supervising many postgraduate research programs. In the meantime, he’s been working as an advisor of petroleum geology for international oil companies (Shell, Schlumberger, Edison, Petronas and Hess in addition to other joint venture companies in Egypt). He enjoys more than 30 years of experience in both academia and industry. He led and participated in several exploration projects and special studies regarding, reservoir characterization, sequence stratigraphy, basin architecture and tectonostratigraphic controls of petroleum systems, geological site investigation and environmental assessments. Ahmed was a principal and co-principal investigator for multidisciplinary projects that link geology with other branches of science like astronomy and vertebrate palaeontology and palaeo-biogeography.  He carries out sedimentological research in various depositional environments. He conducts geological field seminars for both students of geology and professional geoscientists. He authored and co-authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals and magazines. He obtained broad regional experience in the geology of Egypt, Africa and Middle East through several consultations and research projects. He is reviewer for international journals including Journal of African Earth Science, GeoArabia, and American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). He is also a consultant for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Dr ElBarkooky got the AAPG Public Service Award in 2010 for his volunteering efforts preparing the technical report to declare the Whales’ valley in Egypt as a World Heritage Site. He is also the advisor for initiatives of students and fresh graduates of geosciences such as AAPG Student chapters and Young Professionals to fill the gap between academia and industry.
